Canada 150

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

This project is sponsored by Taking It Global who's mission is to empower the youth to understand and act on the  world's greatest challenges. Nine local emerging artists in Vancouver have been commissioned to collaborate on a national initiative to inspire a better future through art and color. WISH 150 Mosaic will be about our WISH to Canada as we commemorate Canada's 150th birthday and the Coast Salish Indigenous peoples.

OPENING NIGHT

"SPIRIT"

Spirit is a story about how we are all privileged to be living on this land we call Canada. The land not only provided basic necessities back in the day, like food, shelter and clothing, but also taught lessons of co-existing with one another:

RAVEN

The Raven, carrier of light, taught stories of right and wrong.

OWL

The owl, wisdom and foresight.

WOLVES

The wolves, loyalty and relationship.

MOTHER BEAR

The mother bear, strength &

humility through motherhood.

SALMON

The salmon, determination & persistence.

RIVER

Even the river had something to share: Go with the flow.

Through this Spirit of gratitude and respect for life, our Coast Salish peoples had formed deep connections with their  surroundings and   carried out a promise to be protectors of this land so that we all today, can also call this land, home.

There’s one more object in this painting. The canoe, a symbol of working towards one goal together.  Much like the “Spirit”, you won't see it right away, but if you look for it, it will be there.

My wish for Canada is for more people, the youth, to discover this Spirit and make connections with the life in their environment and with one another.
