THE PROCESS

Sid is one of the sweetest

most loving beings we've ever met. He has been an amazing  comfort through some really tough times for both of us. Just a beautiful kind soul.

Broderick-Wong-Watercolor-Cat-Portraits-Sid-Reference-3.jpg

He Loves Scritches

on his cheeks, cardboard boxes, and head bonks with his favorite humans. He likes to eat hair, and hulks out right before feeding time.

Broderick-Wong-Watercolor-Cat-Portraits-Sid-Reference-4.jpg

He is the messiest eater

flinging wet food on everything in close (or not so close)proximity. He loves to reach his arm out and pull your hand back to his cheeks if he needs more scritches.

Broderick-Wong-Watercolor-Cat-Portraits-Sid-Reference-1.jpg

He also has no qualms

about smacking chips, popcorn or pretzels out of your hand. He is very inquisitive and many of his meows are clearly questions.

STEP 1

A quick study was done to capture some  of Sid’s qualities.  I used these core ideas as inspiration: • Moving Tribute • Reaching arm out • Inquisitive • Tabby color  (And yes, they were indeed drawn on Post Its!)

STEP 2

I used as much of the image and video references to stay true to Sid’s features. I had to juxtapose different images even, and draw them out, to capture a look and specific posture.

STEP 3

This is the second sketch I made, refining Sid's features now to get a better sense of how the final image would look.

STEP 4

This sequence not only captures his personality but animates his outstanding characteristics as well, through your eyes. Quickly dart your eye from one image to the next.

The painting begins. Because these poses were imagined, each pose was carefully painted, using whatever images I had, to stay true to the patterns of his fur.

Chad is deeply touched by the meaningfulness of the tribute for Sid. He also loves your interpretation of Sid’s personality, and so do I. Thank you again for making this happen and putting such care and thoughtfulness into it.

Taking people on a journey through some of your processes, from inception to completion (and with the small faded story portrait painting images on each card), definitely ups the wow factor! Plus, the neat in-process sketches you posted on insta are a great way to involve folks in how a project took shape/was formed. Purrtraits really is a magical offering and I’m so glad this worked out!

I cannot produce sufficient words to express what the gift means. The care and tenderness that you put into the work are only equaled by the skill and talent that you displayed in its creation.

From the style to color selection, to the interesting and unique format, to the capturing of Sid's mannerisms and personality...It's just too much. All that to say, Thank You.

Cat Purrsonality Fact #1

Cats will refuse an unpalatable food to the point of starvation.

They are believed to be the only mammals who don't taste sweetness.
